PWR Shows Its Might at 2008 Northwest Masters Regionals
After three days of racing at Vancouver Lake, June 20-22, Portland Women's Rowing proved it is among the Northwest's strongest women's teams, and the most competitive women's sweep club in Portland. Fourteen PWR rowers filled out boats in seven team events: WAA-A8+, WB8+, WC8+, WD8+, WAA-A4+, WB4+, and WD4+.
On Friday, the C8+ took bronze behind Lake Washington (Seattle) and Marin (Bay Area). The A8+ won bronze on Saturday behind Marin and Lake Washington, and then three PWR rowers hot seated into the B4+ where we took silver behind Lake Washington. On Sunday, PWR brought home a second silver in the WB8+, trailing Lake Washington by just two-tenths of a second in a neck-and-neck race to the line. PWR also medaled in the WA4+, taking bronze behind Lake Union (Seattle) and Lake Washington in a very competitive field requiring three heats.
PWR Takes Third at Opening Day in Seattle (2008)
Portland Women's Rowing was the only non-Seattle crew to compete in the Women's 8+ 40+ event, placing third behind Lake Washington and Pocock and ahead of Green Lake. It was a fantastic race, with yachts lining either side of the course and the Husky marching band at the finish line!
PWR wins Silver in the Masters A W8+ and gold in the Masters C W4+ at the 2007 Head of the Lake Regatta.
Despite spending over two hours in the warm-up area in bone-chilling conditions, PWR's Masters A entry in the 8+ nabbed second place honors behind Lake Union, over the shortened course. The PWR entry in the Masters C 4+ earned top billing, also after long waits and less-than-ideal rowing conditions.
PWR Wins 2007 Row for the Cure
Portland Women's Rowing was pleased to participate in the 2007 Row for the Cure, a great event in support of a great cause. The annual Row for the Cure, hosted on our own Willamette River by Portland Boathouse neighbor Station L Rowing Club, supports the Susan G. Komen Foundation's efforts to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. The downtown Portland course starts at the Portland Boathouse near the Hawthorne Bridge, heads down the east side of the river to the Broadway Bridge, where crews execute a 180-degree turn mid-race and sprint upriver on the west side to the finish line between the Morrison and Hawthorne Bridges. PWR was one of nine crews from the Pacific Northwest entered in the women's masters eight category and brought home gold.
PWR Schedule
We are currently rowing Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and (often) Wednesdays. Members sign-up here. Guests/prospective members are always welcome at our practice sessions, as space allows. E-mail info@portlandwomensrowing.org for more information and to arrange a time to join us.
PWR Hosts Olympians Lynn Jennings and Lisa Schlenker for Evening of Insight into the Olympics and Beyond
On October 4, 2007, Portland Women's Rowing was proud to present an evening of inspiration and insight in partnership with Portland State University Campus Recreation. Olympians Lynn Jennings (track and field) and Lisa Schlenker (rowing) headlined the event, which raised funds to support Schlenker's ongoing bid for the 2008 Olympics and Portland Women's Rowing. Attendees were treated to video footage of World Championship and Olympic racing by the two athletes, a slide show, and a moderated discussion about the training, motivation, and mental preparation required to realize the Olympic dream. Thanks to all who attended!
PWR Featured in Portland Tribune
Ellison Weist of the Portland Tribune captured a typical PWR practice on the Willamette in a feature story published on April 17, 2007. Read "Strokes on the water."
Avia Outfits PWR
PWR wants to thank Avia, the athletic footwear and apparel company, for its generous gift of sweat-wicking sports bras, tees, long-sleeve tops, running shoes, and indoor cross-training shoes. The rowers wore the Avia gear with pride at the Covered Bridge Regatta on April 14 in Eugene, where the club’s 8 and 4+ both won gold medals in the women’s Masters races.
PWR Brings Gold and Silver Home From Green Lake
At the 2007 Green Lake Extravagaza in Seattle, PWR took the top two finishes in the Masters Women's single event. Team boats won second in the Masters Women's 8+ and the Open 4+.
PWR Wins Gold at Covered Bridge (2007)
In April, Portland Women's Rowing competed in the Masters 8 and 4+ events at Covered Bridge (Dexter Reservoir, outside Eugene), placing first on the water in both races and maintaining gold in the age-adjusted results. It was a great way to kick off the 2007 racing season! Scroll down to check out our winning record.
PWR Adds Four/Quad to Fleet
In early April 2007, Portland Women's Rowing welcomed a nearly-new Vespoli four/quad to our fleet. Many thanks to the members who contributed funds to make the boat purchase possible. Many thanks, also, to Nick Haley of Rose City Rowing Club for delivering the boat from the San Diego Crew Classic to its new home in the Portland Boathouse. We won gold in our first race as a 4+ at Covered Bridge, April 14. Here's to many more horizons....
